Keith Steele Has a Monster Weekend with Back-To-Back Victories
in Crandon
Madison, WI (June 24, 2008) - Monster Energy’s Keith Steele
came to the world center of short-course off-road racing
looking to gain points on the WSORR Super Truck leader, Dan
Baudoux. The Goodyear Tire shod Super Truck did just that,
with back to back victories at the Forest County Potawatomi
Brush Run in Crandon, Wisconsin. This puts one of the
sport’s “Young Guns” at the top of the current WSORR Super
Truck Championship points standings.
Saturday - Round 3
The start saw Keith Steele and his #229 Monster Energy
Goodyear Tires Chevrolet Silverado go door-to-door with #210
Hoek and #297 Wandahsega for the lead. The three trucks were
nose to tail the entire first lap.
Two laps later the Goodyear tires did their job as Keith
made the pass around Wandahsega stick as the Monster Energy
Chevy took the lead. The remainder of the race Keith was
unchallenged and brought home the victory.
Overnight the Steele Off-Road Race team went through the
usual Saturday prep. Keith Steele, someone who never rests
on his laurels, made a slight valving adjustment to the rear
suspension looking to keep the competition at bay.
Sunday – Round 4
The land rush start saw the #229 Monster Energy Goodyear
Tires Chevrolet Silverado charge to the front of pack and
never looked back. Keith led the race wire-to-wire for his
second victory of the year.
Quickly, the Steele Off-Road crew went to work prepping the
race truck for the Forest County Potawatomi Chairman’s Cup
Heavy Metal Challenge. The Super Truck teams had about four
hours to get their trucks ready for the big money showdown.
During that time period, sporadic rain showers pass through
the area. Then about an hour before the Cup race the rain
became quite heavy. Then the rain stopped just as the
Chairman’s Cup field was lining up for the start.
In order to give the two-wheel drive trucks a chance at the
win, the PRO-2WD and Super Trucks started a half lap a head
of the PRO-4x4 racers. Thanks to the afternoon rain showers,
most thought the .7 mile lead still would not be enough to
give the 4x2 trucks a fair shot. In any case, the Chairman’s
Cup race not only pays the top overall finishers of the
event, but the top finishers in each class that are
competing. The event becomes a race within a race.
When the green flag was dropped, the two-wheel drive trucks
went everywhere. During the first few laps trucks, trucks
spun out at almost every turn. For a brief time Keith Steele
put his Monster Energy truck in the overall lead. The
position was short lived as he spun out as well. The last
half of the race saw Wandahsega, Hoek, and Steele running
close together, with Wandahsega in the lead. At the finish
Keith Steel finished third in the Super Truck division and
ninth overall.
The overall winner of the Chairman’s Cup was Kent Brascho in
his Chevrolet powered PRO-4x4. Kent drove a quick smooth
race and never put a wheel wrong the entire time.
After the weekend was complete, Keith Steele commented; “I‘m
finally getting more comfortable with this Monster Energy
Super Truck. The chassis changes we made last night really
improved the handling of the truck. This class is very
competitive so you have bring your A game every time. The
Goodyear tires and the King Shocks really compliment each
other. Our Wolverine powerplant never misses a beat. The
Chairman’s Cup was a handful for everybody. As a racer I
just over drove the first few laps, and then couldn’t really
make up the difference. Another lesson learned.”
After four rounds of racing, Keith Steele leads the 2008
WSORR Super Truck Points Championship.
The next race is Island Casino/Boss Snow Off-Road Challenge,
July 12-13, in Bark River, Michigan.
